ed moses recent paintings

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Ed Moses.

Since his earliest show at the Ferus gallery in Los Angeles in 1958, Ed Moses has brought continued vigorous and experimentation to abstract painting. Consciously resisting a signature “style” or rote method of working, he has persisted in reinventing his process, resulting in painting consistently rich with discovery.

Moses’ newest body of work continues to reveal this varied usage. Paint is poured, pushed and trowled across the canvas, creating abstract fields which reflect a break with his previous use of the grid. These methods allow for organic discovery by both artist and viewer — as Moses has said, “I don’t make paintings, I find them.”

The large, sometimes two panelled works exhibited combine bold, sweeping, spontaneous gestures with a muted palette. At times the works suggest landscapes and at others express pure energy and rhythm. As Francis Colpitt wrote in a recent Art in America article, “Moses’ youthful exuberance and dogged perseverance in testing—and adding to—the practice of painting effectively rekindles the medium’s potent allure.”

Ed Moses’ work has been shown throughout the Untied States and Europe, most recently at L.A. Louver Gallery. In 1996, “ed Moses: A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings, 1951- 1996” was organized by John Yau at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
